Do Violent Games Desensitise Children To Violence?

Do Violent Games Desensitise Children To Violence? computer game

Over recent years there have been many arguments proposed by those who are not in favour of computer games or video games, or have concerns about either the amount of time spent playing such games, or the nature of the images and scenes watched by those playing them. One of the common arguments put forward is that computer and video games , through the nature of violence and graphic horror, are desensitizing children to violence and horror in the real world. There argument is that by watching vivid and repeated images on the screen of violence, aggression, killing and other physical attacking, the children or young people playing the games will start to accept this level of violence, or way of interacting with those around you, and in the real world, be more likely to be aggressive, or produce an aggressive or violent response to a given stimuli.

This argument, however popular it may be, is deeply flawed, and in truth holds no water at all. There have been many studies that have demonstrated that there has never been, and is not today, any measurable correlation between the amount of video gaming a person plays and any violent characteristics in the real world.

One explanation for why this may be the case can be found not in humans, but in a wide variety of other animals – in particular apes and other primates. These primates will frequently take part in what we call play fighting. To an outsider it can look and sound quite frightening, with expectations of blood, injury or even death. However, what the observer will also notice is that once the fight is over, both parties happily walk away completely uninjured and none the worse for wear. More than likely they’ll be related or good friends within the family or group. This is quite different to genuine fighting, for perhaps defence against an intruding group, or a fight for leadership, when injuries might be suffered. These primates know the difference between play fighting and real fighting, and no matter how active it may appear, they both know and follow the rules of play fighting within that environment.

Children follow the same behavioural paths as primates, in as much as they know and understand the difference between fighting and aggression on screen, within a play environment, and such behaviour in the real world. In particular, primates and humans (some would argue that they’re the same thing!) are very good at being able to catalogue and separate behaviours in this way, and that no matter how aggressive a child may be in game, they understand that it is just a game, and mentally apply a different set of rules.

This ability is almost certainly hereditary, since if our ancestors, primates, didn’t have the ability to understand the difference between play fighting and real fighting, the chances that we would have evolved this far is somewhat unlikely.

PARENT, THINK ABOUT HEALTH HAZARD OF THE VIDEO GAMES ON CHILDREN

Thursday Feb 17, 2011

Parents may not realize how dangerous video games can be to their children’s health, reports El Universal Newspaper of Mexico City. According to Antonio Gonzalez Hermosillo, president of the Mexican society of Cardiology, up to 40 percent of children who constantly play video games will develop high blood pressure.

Why? Because in addition to lack of exercise, the children come under stress from highly involved in situations that are perceived as dangerous, such as attacks, virtual fights, and other conflicts.

“The specialist warned that this will make cases of cardiovascular disease, the primary cause of Death in Mexico, shoots up in the country,” said the paper. Watch over your child in secret and put some control in the way they use cadget. Most importantly, bring up your child in the way of the Lord that when they grow up he or she will not departed from the way of the truth that is profitable to life.

The home video game industry is now over 30 years old. In that time, computer technology has improved at a geometric rate. A high speed elevator now has more computing power than the Apollo spacecraft that landed on the moon. The promise of computers and video games as teachers was clearly recognized in the 1980s when there was a nationwide push to get computers into the classrooms. In the years that have followed, researchers found that educational software and games can indeed have several very positive effects on children’s academic skill.

Over the same period, video games also moved into children’s homes. (I define video games broadly here, as including arcade games, computer games, and home console games such as PlayStation.) Children began playing video games for increasing amounts of time, and the games themselves became more graphically violent over time. Parents, educators, physicians, and researchers began to question what the impact of these changes might be. says Douglas A Gentile

Video Games For Underage Children

Monday Nov 29, 2010

A common assumption today is that the majority of people who either buy or play computer games and video games are children or young teenagers. In fact, well over sixty percent of all those who do play or buy such video games are over the age of eighteen. It is largely the older brothers and sisters, or even parents of the children who are the majority of gamers. When you look at the type and range of video games and computer games on the market, there is a large variety, some of which are suitable for children and families, but many of which are not, and in the case of video games which do feature more mature or adult content, this is clearly displayed on the cover label. Shops and retailers have a duty to ensure that games labelled for those only over the age of sixteen or eighteen are not sold to underage children, with proofs of age required in the case of any uncertainty. In reality, this actually happens quite rarely – even more rare than those retailers who check the ages of people buying videos and movies that have similar age restrictions or advice labels on them.

In fact, over eighty three percent of all those adults who buy computer games or video games for children against the publisher’s age recommendations are the parents themselves. There are perhaps three main reasons why this tends to be the case. The first reason is that many parents don’t even realise that computer games and video games have age limitations or restrictions at all. Unless they have carefully looked at the covers and read the labels, there is no other way of them knowing or realising. The second possible reason is that the parents know that there are age guidelines, but through simple child pester power, they give in. The age old excuse that all the child’s friends have it, and they’ve played it before many times, some parents imply give in for a quiet life.

A third possible reason is simply ignorance – that parents don’t realise just how much computer graphical capabilities have developed in the last few years. Many parents may be thinking back to the eighties when computer graphics were very pixelated and bland – no more than cartoons at best. They may well not realise that the graphical capabilities of a good video game and computer system today means that the level of detail is scarcely less that would be seen in a movie. Unless parents play an active role in looking carefully at the labels on video games, and even seeing the game itself, then this ignorance may well persist.

Perhaps it is the responsibility of the video games industry itself to increase the awareness of the importance of age guidelines on computer games, to help get the message across. If the eighty three percent of parents who buy underage goods for their children stopped doing this, then the problem of children playing these games would be seriously addressed. Clearly, since the majority of video gamers are adults, a change on the type of game available is not likely, or even appropriate, and so it is down to making sure that inappropriate items don’t fall into the wrong hands, as with anything such as alcohol, videos and car keys.

Home school Computer curriculum preparing children for an interactive future computer technology

Children and even senior citizens know computers. This era is all about the dynamic power of the Internet. The real of computer and multitasking have been intensified with the introduction of the Internet. This entity has become a new world for everyone, conquering borders and changing the way businesses, information dissemination and even education is being presented. With this overwhelming embrace of the world in the Internet culture, children are not anymore ignorant about the existence of this dimension. The Internet has become so familiar that it has been embedded in society already. It is then essential that children learn properly the ways in which computer technology and the Internet can help children. Home School Computer curriculum is being taught now to children.

What is good about Home School Computer curriculum is that children can be guided in the best ways that the computer technology can be used. Parents can setup a computer at home that will serve as the children’s workstation. This computer can be set up to be more child friendly by blocking the sites that could come across as not good for children and to limit the internet access for them to maximize their time learning. In this method, children can learn the various skills essential for their level of understanding.

In the most basic of Home School Computer curriculum lessons, parents can teach them the essential hardware as well as software. Understanding these aspects can help them know more the various purposes of each device and how they are important for computer usage. The next aspect is software. Children need to learn and have fun at the same time. It would be best to teach them first the basics of programs that can be used to make art like Paint, Greeting card and Stationery designs, freehand designs and many more ways of making their exploration of the computer more worthwhile.

The nest level of the Home School Computer curriculum is teaching the children the most basic processes that can be done such as word processing. In this method, children can learn printing, sending emails and saving documents. This will also help them explore the ways to make their projects more colorful and informative by adding images on the document. It will help them become more capable of handling bigger tasks at hand.

As the level of the child advances, the Home School Computer curriculum will increase in difficulty. The child can now understand basic programming as well as web page and HTML codes. This will challenge them to handle more complex tasks. One can use user-friendly programs and also give them tests to gauge their understanding of the project at hand. This will give them an in depth knowledge of the Internet and the processes that make the Internet amazing and fun to engage into.

Depending on the skills of the child, parents can now introduce programs that are more of intermediate level and let them use their creativity to make projects that would use computers. They could make a presentation, a video, web page or anything else possible. Home School Computer curriculum will boost the creativity of children and prepare them for bigger things in the future. The amazing world of computer and Internet is something that parents should not hide to children. Parents however should be responsible enough to guide their kids by setting controls while they are young to help them be focused on learning while they are having fun at the same time.

There are numerous benefits of home schooling a child. Benefits include choosing an appropriate and proper home school curriculum, which includes math, History curriculum, writing, science, and a Home school computer curriculum for your child.
